UVI has already risen to moderate

The Ultraviolet Index (UVI) indicates the intensity level of the sun’s ultraviolet rays at a given location and time. This, according to the pharmacist, helps us assess the strength of SPF protection we need.

“Ultraviolet rays from the sun are dangerous for our skin all year round, so products with SPF protection should be used in all seasons. And yet, although UVI is often low in winter in Lithuania, this spring we can already notice its increase, which has reached average strength in recent days. This means that especially at noon, between 11:00 and 15:00, we must be more responsible to protect ourselves from ultraviolet rays of the sun by using hats, glasses and, of course, SPF products”, says pharmacist M. Rutalė.

Consequences from skin burns to melanoma

According to the pharmacist, an excessive amount of ultraviolet rays is dangerous and can not only cause painful skin burns, but also have long-term consequences.

“The SPF filter can protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun, which can lead to the appearance of moles and other skin formations, and also determine skin changes such as wrinkles, pigment spots, couperosis. Not only that, UV radiation promotes the development of skin cancer, also known as melanoma. Meanwhile, using products with strong SPF protection, we can even slow down skin aging, increase its elasticity and firmness. And if you have faint pigment spots, the SPF filter can help lighten them,” says pharmacist M. Rutalė.

Not only protect your skin from the sun, but also nourish it

“If we protect our skin from the cold in the winter and therefore use face creams with an oilier texture, we can return to a lighter texture in the spring. If you have oily skin, choose a water-based cream, and if your skin is dry, give preference to creams with an oily texture. Also, in the spring, carefully examine your skin to see if you see any changes in it that should be addressed to a dermatologist,” says pharmacist M. Rutalė.

“Check for new skin growths, moles, or pigmentation spots from last summer over the winter.” In men, they can sometimes appear in the beard area, which is easier to notice after shaving it. There are more signals that should prompt you to see a dermatologist.

For example, after drinking tea or eating soup, you began to “break out” with redness, blisters appeared on the skin, or the skin became more oily than usual. In all of these cases, the dermatologist could lead you on the path of what means to solve the problems”, says pharmacist M. Rutalė.
