Rosatom announced today, Tuesday, that operating work has begun on the first power unit at the Akkuyu nuclear power station, which it is building in Turkey.

The Russian company said, in a statement, that the “Akuyu” station project witnessed a new major stage, which is the start of work on the first power unit in the station.

Trial operation is the final stage of building the power unit in nuclear power stations, and includes a set of steps such as preparation, monitoring and testing to ensure reliable and safe operation of the station.

It is planned to operate the first power unit in the station, which is the first in Turkey, this year (2024).

In mid-December, Rosatom reported that it had obtained the necessary licenses from the Turkish authorities to operate the first reactor at the Akkuyu station.

The station is being built on the basis of a government agreement concluded between Russia and Turkey on May 12, 2010. The cost of the project is $20 billion and includes the construction of 4 reactors with a total capacity of 4,800 megawatts.

On April 27, 2023, Rosatom delivered enriched uranium to the Akkuyu station, and thus the station became nuclear.
