The situation at Ásotthalom is extremely tense, serious atrocities and armed clashes between gangster gangs specializing in human trafficking are a daily occurrence. The daily life of the settlement on the Hungarian-Serbian border is made miserable by migration pressure. Illegal immigrants come across the border practically without control, they cut through the metal fence in seconds with the help of human smugglers. The police is struggling with a lack of manpower, so it cannot guard the entire area of the fence, which is exploited by border violators who come to the country en masse and then go on to other member states of the European Union.

André Kertész Grand Prix: Dénes Erdős

According to international conventions on the prevention of poverty, everyone has the right to a dignified life and housing. On the other hand, evictions are constantly taking place in our country, which shows the unfair reality we live in: due to high inflation and energy prices, more and more people are finding it a challenge to pay for their housing. In Hungary, the eviction of the poorest people goes unnoticed. Due to the already routine administrative procedures, their violent nature becomes invisible to everyday people. This structural violence can only be demonstrated by the living chains organized against evictions. Despite the fact that Hungary has an eviction moratorium every winter, 3-4 thousand evictions still take place every year to the detriment of roughly 10-12 thousand people. Although the moratorium can provide temporary protection to those who are in a vulnerable situation, it does not bring a lasting solution, it only covers up the underlying problems for the time being.

The Szürke Ház building, which was once full of service apartments, was sold to an investor, which made the housing of the people living there questionable. The new owner tripled the rents.
