Julian Ryerson has become one of Borussia Dortmund’s most important players after his transfer from Union Berlin.
Apart from an injury break towards the end of 2023, the heather has been firmly in the eleven of Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.
He has also been in the national team apprentice to Ståle Solbakken for the past year.
TV 2’s football expert Simen Stamsø-Møller thinks the national team boss wishes he had more Ryerson types in the stable.
– I think Ståle wishes he had at least eight of them. Players he knew delivered at a high level and are reliable. He may not be the most exciting player, but such players are required to achieve what Norway is trying to achieve.
– There is no doubt that in a short time he has become very, very good and is an example to follow.
On Wednesday, Lyngdølen plays a central role in Dortmund’s quest for a place in the Champions League semi-finals.

Compared to club legend
Borussia Dortmund paid just five million euros for Ryerson, a sum you rarely see big clubs pay for players who go straight into the eleven.
– I think we can safely say that he was a coup. I think he went a bit under the radar of other clubs. Dortmund had a big need for a new right-back, there was a bit of uncertainty around him, but he won the place very quickly.
That’s what a spokesman for Borussia Dortmund’s Norwegian supporters’ club, Marcus Jenssen Olsen, told TV 2.
The Norwegian Dortmund supporter tells TV 2 that Lyngdølen has become a big star among the club’s supporters.
– I think many people see that he represents the value base on which the club is built. He is hardworking and plays with his heart outside the suit. Such things are very important in Dortmund.
Jenssen Olsen draws parallels to one of the club’s greatest heroes in recent times. The Pole Lukasz Piszczek who played almost 300 games for the yellow and black.
– Ryerson is a kind of reincarnation of Piszczek, he says.
His reputation didn’t exactly drop when he recently decided Dortmund’s match against arch-rivals Bayern Munich.

– He has had a very good development in Dortmund, he is a physical monster. He is also taking a bigger and bigger place in the national team, says Ståle Solbakken to TV 2.
I think he has a bigger star than Haaland had
The supporter club’s spokesman uses big words about Ryerson, so big that you forget what Erling Braut Haaland did at the club.
During two and a half seasons at Borussia Dortmund, Braut Haaland scored 86 goals in 89 games.
Unreal numbers.
Nevertheless, according to the supporters’ club’s spokesman, Lyngdølen has managed to become a bigger star in the club.
– It is very difficult to compare them… The thing about Haaland was that he was so extremely good. He was sometimes too good for the club, which was also a bit of a problem. We knew he was on borrowed time and would be moving on in a short time.

– But Ryerson, we know we have him for the foreseeable future. There is no indication that Ryerson will move on. In this sense, I would actually see Ryerson as a bigger star than Haaland. He represents the culture on which Dortmund is founded. He is loyal and gives everything in every match, says Jenssen Olsen to TV 2.

TV 2’s football expert Simen Stamsø-Møller is unsure whether the 26-year-old will take another step up the football ladder, but he is sure that he can get even better.
– He can certainly take even more steps. There are some footballers who take things faster than others, Ryerson is one such player. He has proven that limitations are something you only set yourself, really. He can get better, but he is probably approaching his ceiling, says Simen Stamsø-Møller.

– No, I don’t think Dortmund is a stepping stone for him. I think he may have found his peak. There will probably be a little more, in that case it must be if someone suddenly needs a right-back. But Dortmund is a very good level for Ryerson, says TV 2’s expert.
Nevertheless, goals against Bayern Munich and solid performances will surely ensure that bigger clubs are well informed about the Norwegian full-back.
Ståle Solbakken believes there is one thing he must improve on the national team.
– Especially offensively, he has developed, so we want him to become even more confident in our way of playing zone games, says Solbakken and continues:
– The reason for that is that it happens that there is a mix between that and the slightly more marking-oriented game that is in Dortmund. He has not only developed in Dortmund and in the national team, he perhaps laid the very best foundation in Union Berlin, says Norway’s national team boss.
