5 people were killed when a launch tied to a pontoon at Sadarghat fell down due to the impact of another launch. 3 of them are from the same family. They are – Md. Bellal (26), his wife Mukta (23) and their child Maisha (4).
Mukta’s sister-in-law Zahirul Islam rushed to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital after hearing the news of death in the accident. He said that Belal used to work in a garment factory in Gazipur. Lived there with his wife and daughter. His village home is in Mathbaria of Pirojpur.
Zahirul said that Belal came to Sadarghat with his wife and children to go home on the day of Eid. He said Belal’s parents are not alive. After his death, there was no one left in that family, including his wife and children.
Relatives of those who lost their lives in the accident while boarding the launch at Sadarghat are lamenting
The other two killed are Ripon Howladar (38) and Rabiul (19). Patuakhali is home of Ripon Howlader. He lived in Bhatara Thana area of the capital. Besides, Rabiul’s home is Thakurgaon.
Sadarghat Naval Police Sub-Inspector Liaquat Ali said that the bodies are in the mortuary of Midford Hospital. At 3 pm on Thursday, five people were injured when the rope of the Tasrif-4 launch berthed at Sadarghat broke. We rushed the injured to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital. But when they were taken to the hospital, the doctor declared them dead. There are three people in the same family, husband and wife and their children.
Those who died were probably looking for a launch to reach their destination, he said. In that situation, the Tasrif-4 launch rope broke and fell on them. The launch rope is very thick and heavy. When it tears, it tears very quickly.
SI Liaqat Ali said that no case has been filed in this incident so far. Further legal proceedings are ongoing. If the relatives of the deceased want to take the dead body without post-mortem, they have to apply to the Naval Police. Further action will be taken according to their application.

Earlier, the incident took place in front of pontoon No. 11 of Sadarghat on Thursday (April 11) afternoon.
Dhaka River Port (Sadarghat) Joint Commissioner (Traffic) Zainal Abedin said that five people were killed in the incident at Sadarghat. Their bodies are kept at Midford Hospital.
After the incident, BIWTA canceled the route permit and journey of MV Tafseer and MV Farhan. Besides, Farhan’s driver has fled. Police Superintendent Saifur Rahman said that the company commander of RAB-10 is trying to arrest him. However, Farhan’s manager Rajiv claims that their launch is not responsible for the accident. MV Tasrif authorities are making false allegations.
