Entrepreneurs, energy experts and those responsible for administrations have gathered at the conference “The Energy Future in the Industry of Southern Spain”, a meeting organized by CESUR, Association of Entrepreneurs of Southern Spain and Edison Next, a services company energy group and subsidiary of the energy group EDISON and the French giant EDF, in which the keys to decarbonization in the business fabric of Andalusia, Extremadura, Ceuta and Melilla have been revealed.
The event was inaugurated by Fernando Seco, executive vice president of CESUR, who put on the table how “decarbonization can be a great growth opportunity for companies in the south,” and called for collaboration between public entities and private companies to improve energy efficiency and promote the circular economy.
In this framework, Íñigo Bertrand, CEO of Edison Next, gave the presentation “Monetization of energy savings: increasing competitiveness in the industry” where he highlighted the importance for companies of having an energy partner to accompany them in its decarbonization process, and has highlighted the value proposition of Edison Next, focused on offering comprehensive and personalized solutions for the decarbonization of its clients.
“Our comprehensive approach ranges from the identification of opportunities to improve energy efficiency and the management of energy savings certificates, to the development of renewable energy initiatives and circular economy projects, always guaranteeing coordinated and effective execution in all initiatives in those of us who participate”Bertrand noted. The manager has reiterated the importance and effectiveness of the Energy Saving Certificates (CAEs) system, when it comes to achieving compliance with the sustainability and climate change objectives that Spain has set for the year 2030.
“The Energy Savings Certificate system (CAE) has become a tool that really manages to add value and promote energy efficiency in Spain, just as it has already done in countries such as France or Italy. Thanks to this, the number of companies that value the possibility of implementing energy efficiency and sustainability projects is being considerably increased.”, assured the CEO of Edison Next.
Next, a discussion table moderated by Manuel Larrasa, Secretary General of Energy of the Junta de Andalucía, took place, where decarbonization was analyzed as an opportunity and tool to improve and boost the competitiveness of companies and in which David participated Aguilera, Corporate Director of Energy Efficiency of CL Grupo Industrial and General Director of Gas Extremadura; Íñigo Bertrand, CEO of Edison Next; José María Piñar, CEO of Elmya; and Javier Targhetta, CEO of Atlantic Copper.
In this forum, David Aguilera, corporate director of Energy Efficiency of CL Grupo Industrial and general director of Gas Extremadura, has assured that, as a Group, “We have a very ambitious objective: to reduce our consumption per unit produced by 10% and to ensure that 10% of our electricity comes from photovoltaic installations, prioritizing self-consumption.”. To which he added that “After the critical situation experienced with the war in Ukraine, we are clear that our area of influence in terms of decarbonization and industrial competitiveness is energy efficiency to reduce energy consumption in our plants, the cheapest and cleanest energy is that is not used”.
For his part, José María Piñar, CEO of Elmya, stated that “The current situation of the Iberian energy market is unsustainable, and if the regulator does not intervene, the PNIEC objectives will not be met”. Furthermore, the Sevillian businessman has clarified that “on the one hand, the marginalist market has ceased to be efficient, and if it remains in force we will see increasingly greater increases (sudden increases) and negative prices, and on the other hand, energy storage must be regulated accordingly. as soon as possible.” Regarding the world of renewable gas, Piñar assures that “In the short term, green hydrogen will be a reality in the decarbonization industry, especially in those industries that already consume gray hydrogen. In the medium term, it will be a reality in heavy transportation and even as an alternative to the current natural gas network.”.
While Javier Targhetta, CEO of Atlantic Copper, has clarified that “The Andalusian industry is fully committed to continuing to work side by side, both with the Junta de Andalucía and with the Government of Spain to achieve a high degree of energy competitiveness which, in turn, is an indispensable component for our competitiveness in general. Fortunately, both administrations are showing high awareness of the need to make the fight against climate change compatible with industrial development. We are facing a great opportunity to successfully face these two great challenges and thus ensure our leadership in the global industry.”.
The meeting was closed by Ana M.ª Vielba, Deputy Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines of the Junta de Andalucía, who highlighted the high competitiveness that the Andalusian region has in energy matters, “both for its strategic location and high availability of transportation, land and talent”. The deputy minister assures that energy management “It is the lever that will reindustrialize our region by attracting companies from outside”. In addition, he highlighted the commitment that the regional government makes to quality training and administrative simplification. Likewise, he has announced that “The Board has reinforced its delegation in Brussels to closely follow regulatory changes in industry, energy and mines”.
