泰 Confirmed by setting a Korean record at the World Cup
Mother who battled cancer for 6 years passed away earlier this month

‘Post Jang Mi-ran’ Park Hye-jeong (21, photo) overcame the pain of her mother’s death and set a Korean record to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Park Hye-jung won silver medals in all three categories at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup women’s heaviest weight (over 87 kg) competition held in Phuket, Thailand on the 10th, lifting 130 kg in snatch, 166 kg in clean and jerk, and 296 kg in total. In May last year, she broke her own Korean record (295kg total) at the Jinju Asian Weightlifting Championships. Previously, the total weight of 326kg recorded by Jang Mi-ran (41), Second Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism in the women’s heavyweight class (75kg or more at the time) at the 2008 Beijing Olympics is currently classified as a ‘past record’ as the IWF changed the weight class standards.

Before this competition, which was her last chance to qualify for the Paris Olympics, Park Hye-jung also experienced pain. On the 2nd of this month, ahead of her departure, her mother passed away after fighting cancer for six years. Her mother, a former track and field discus thrower, served as a mental support for Park in her athletic career. “It was difficult, but she competed because it was such an important competition,” Park Hye-jung said after the competition. “My mother would have wanted me here too,” she said.

Park Hye-jung, who won gold medals at the World Championships in September last year and the Asian Games in Hangzhou in October, will attempt to win a medal in Paris, her first Olympic Games. Her strongest competitor on this day is China’s Li Wenwen (24), who won all three categories with 145kg in snatch, 180kg in clean and jerk, and 325kg in total. Li Wenwen, a gold medalist at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, withdrew from last year’s World Championships due to an elbow injury, but this event marks her comeback. Son Young-hee (31), in the same weight class, took third place in all three categories with 122kg in snatch, 161kg in clean and jerk, and 283kg in total. Only one person per country in her weight class is allowed to compete in the Olympics, so Son Young-hee did not get her ticket to Paris.
