“Our state debt is about 40 percent. GDP. At that time, guarantees only account for about 2 percent. If we were to change the State Debt Law, we could release the possibilities to issue more guarantees and in this way create a financial basis for our defense industry companies”, said G. Nausėda at the press conference held at the House of Lords on Thursday.
“I think it would be a timely decision. We will discuss it with lawyers again and submit such a proposal to the Seimas,” he added.
The head of the country mentioned that such additional financing would allow to strengthen cooperation between the defense industry of Lithuania and Ukraine.
“I think that really at this stage we have to look for all means and opportunities to help our friends, because they need help today. And we are ready to provide that help. And there is broad support of the population, which encourages us to make decisions and help Ukraine,” he said.
ELTA reminds that the financing of national defense in Lithuania will amount to 2.75 percent this year. from GDP, but it is aimed that this amount will reach at least 3% in the coming years.
In order to unite society and encourage politicians to agree on 4% as soon as possible. To defend the GDP allocation, civic-minded Lithuanian businesses and organizations are joining the “4 percent” initiative.
