The European Union’s immigration policy reform package approved this week in the European Parliament has been met with widespread criticism. The adoption of the new EU Migration and Asylum Pact, which still needs to be approved by the majority of European Union countries for it to enter into force, has been highly praised by the EU’s top officials and the leaders of some major powers, such as Germany. However, there has already been sharp criticism from far-left and far-right politicians and various human rights organizations. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbáns called the pact another nail in the EU’s coffin. On the other hand, the former President of the Council of the EU, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk has promised to protect his country against the scheme included in the pact, which provides for the equal distribution of asylum seekers among the EU member states.

It will look faster

AFP reports that on Wednesday, after years of discussions, the European Parliament finally approved a package of 10 EU laws proposed by the European Commission after the immigration wave crisis experienced in 2015. The pact still needs to be ratified by the EU member states. Although some of them are categorically against it, it is expected that it will be done on April 29, because approval requires only the acceptance of the majority of member states. It is expected that the pact could enter into force in 2026. In the coming months, the European Commission must develop a concrete plan for its implementation.

The BBC reports that the main aim of the pact is to speed up the processing of immigrants’ asylum applications and the return of rejected immigrants to their host countries.
