Popular actress of South Cinema, Priyamani has now become a well-known name in Bollywood also. He has done many Hindi films till now, including Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Jawaan’. Now Priyamani will be seen in the film ‘Maidan’ with Ajay Devgan. Now she is continuously strengthening her step in Bollywood. After the success of ‘Family Man’, ‘Jawaan’, ‘Article 370’, he is now ready with ‘Maidan’. Priyamani recently had a special conversation with Navbharat Times:

You had done Hindi films like Raavan and Rakta Charitra in the year 2010, when not many actors from the South were seen here. Since then, when you are doing Hindi films like Jawan, Maidaan, what change do you see in the thinking towards the South Industry?

Earlier there was not that much scope for southern actors. There were very few actors from South in the films here. Leaving aside Kamal Haasan sir, Mani Ratnam sir, Rajini sir, there were very limited opportunities for others. Now a lot of technicians are getting their due, getting credit and by that I mean a lot more work. Now even here the actors and technicians of South are getting a lot of work, not only in films but also on OTT, this is a good change. Now the doors have opened for everyone. People from here are going there, people from there are coming here which is a good thing. It should happen like this only.
Why did Priyamani replace Keerthi Suresh in Ajay Devgan’s ‘Maidan’? Director Amit Sharma told the reason

Maidaan is a biopic of Syed Abdul Rahim, starring Ajay Devgan in the lead role. How important is your character in this? How did you get involved in this?

For this, Boney (Kapoor) sir had called my husband. He has worked with my husband before so I asked him if there is a film, will your wife do it? So he said, Sir, you ask and we say no, this may not happen. Then we met him, he told that Badhaai Ho director Amit Sharma is directing. If Ajay Devgan is the costar, then I had made up my mind to do 30 percent because I like the work of both of them as actors. I have seen ‘Badhaai Ho’ and I respect Ajay sir’s film ‘Choices’ a lot. He will do a film only when he believes in the story. Then, when I heard the script, I was completely ready, because my character Saira in the film is not just in name. Of course the story is Rahim Sahab’s story but Saira is his backbone. Wherever he is in despair, she becomes his morale. Both of them have very cute moments in the film.

A big betrayal happened with Priyamani in ‘Javaan’? Director Atlee lied, played a trick on the actress!

Saira is the backbone of Rahim Sahab. There is also a saying that behind every successful man there is a woman. Meaning, the responsibility of the husband’s success was also put on the woman. What is your opinion on this?

No, it is not always true that behind every successful man there is a woman. Her contribution will definitely be there but I would also say that behind a successful woman there is also the contribution of a man who makes sacrifices. I am the best example of this. Many people will not agree with me on this, but my thinking is that only when husband and wife stand with each other as a family, they become successful. It does not happen that tomorrow if one becomes successful then the other has a hand in it.

What is the definition of a strong woman according to you?

If she stands up for what she believes in, then I think she’s a strong woman. Whatever principles and values she has, if she sticks to them then she is a strong woman and she can achieve anything according to me. Whatever the circumstances, one can overcome them. Many people say that I have done everything on my own. I am not saying that he is wrong but I believe that he also has the support of his family behind him. If he is successful and strong, it is because somewhere his family was standing with him. This thing should not be forgotten.

Priyamani will not do onscreen kiss or intimate scene, said- husband has to answer, feels uncomfortable

How was the experience of working with Ajay Devgan?

I was a little nervous before shooting because this film is like this. It is set in the era of 50-60, so what will be the atmosphere of the set? How serious it will be. There was sync sound and there was pin drop silence but Ajay sir made me feel very comfortable. When the shot was getting ready, we used to sit together and in between he used to ask a lot about South Cinema, how is the work culture there, how is this director, how is he a director, so we are mostly people from South Industry. Used to talk about.

You worked with Shahrukh Khan again in ‘Jawaan’ after ‘Chennai Express’. What changes have you noticed in them?

There was not much change. He has become more lovable. It doesn’t mean that they weren’t there then but there are more of them now. She is very sweet, very caring. We all took so much care of the girls. He used to ask all the time if you are okay, if you need anything then tell me. Every evening he would try to get him and us six girls to have dinner together so that we could know each other better. One day he came to know that two girls were musicians so he said that tomorrow I will bring my music system and they actually brought their guitar and speakers so we used to have a jam session in between the shots. We used to talk about everything. Among us, Alia, Sanjeeda and Lehar were very new, so Alia and Sanjeeda had so many questions that why is this, why is it like that? Shahrukh sir used to listen to him and answer with great patience. Whereas, he could have given the shot he wanted and sat in his vanity. Similarly, during ‘Chennai Express’, he also made me feel very comfortable. We shot the song for five nights. On the second or third night we were playing Kaun Banega Crorepati on his iPad. Then they gave me two hundred or three hundred rupees, I answered the question correctly so they gave me the money. Even then it didn’t feel like I was working with a superstar.
