Bengali New Year is just one day later. Like other years, this year’s Pahela Baisakh is less fussy. Because the capital Dhaka is now very empty due to Eid. However, even in this situation, the price of hilsa has increased due to Baishakh in the market. Apart from this, chickens raised around Eid are also being sold at a higher price.

It has been found that the demand and price of hilsa have increased in the markets of the capital around the two festivals of Eid and New Year. In just one week, the price of hilsa has increased by 100 to 150 taka per kg.

However, sellers deny this complaint and say that Hilsa is less caught, so its supply in the market has decreased, and the price is higher for this reason. They say that the fish could not come because of Eid. Come on, they’re expensive.

On Friday (April 12) morning, various markets of Karwan Bazar, Hatirpool and Mirpur in the capital were visited, and Jatka was being sold at Tk 650 to Tk 700 per kg. 700 grams of hilsa is 1200-1300 taka, and 1000 thousand taka is 550-600 grams of hilsa. Jatka and less than 1 kg hilsa are sold more in the market. There is no big hilsa.

Siddique Mia, a fish trader in Mirpur’s raw market, told RisingBD that there are no people in the market because of Eid. The sale of hilsa during the New Year has been low for the past few years. However, it cannot be said that hilsa prices have increased due to the New Year. Now is not the season of fish, there is not much fishing. Therefore, the price of hilsa has increased due to lack of supply.

Meanwhile, the price of vegetables has increased by Tk 5-10 per kg within a week. And the price of chicken has increased by Tk 20-40 per kg. Vegetables and chicken are also being sold at higher prices.

Broiler chicken was sold at the rate of Tk 250 on the moon night, but in a span of 1 day, its price increased by Tk 10 per kg. A seller in the Muslim market said that the chickens have not arrived today, there are only a few chickens. Rate 260 taka, selling to acquaintances for 250 taka.

Apart from this, the price of red layer has increased by about 20-30 taka. Per kg red layer is selling at 380 taka, and golden chicken at 380 taka. Beef is being sold at Tk 1150-1200 and beef at Tk 800 per kg.

Eggplant is being sold at Tk 50-60 per kg, gourd at Tk 40-70, drumstick at Tk 40, barb at Tk 50, cucumber at Tk 30-40 and lati at Tk 60 per kg depending on the standard. Apart from this, papaya is selling at Tk 35-40 per kg, khirai at Tk 30-40, carrot at Tk 40, tomato at Tk 35-40 and patol at Tk 50-60, sweet pumpkin at Tk 40 per kg, chichinga at Tk 35 to Tk 50 per kg. A kg of potatoes is Tk 40. Apart from this, 40-50 taka for each piece of gourd and 50-60 taka for each lemon.

The price of raw chili has also increased. Raw chilli is being sold at Tk 50-60 at wholesale and at Tk 70-80 at retail level. Apart from this, red cabbage is being sold at Tk 15, jute at Tk 15, puishak at Tk 30, Kalmi at Tk 15 and spinach at Tk 15.

Anis, a vegetable seller at Karwan Bazaar in the capital, said that the vegetable truck did not come because of Eid. As a result, the previous vegetables have to be sold. So the price went up.

The prices of ginger, garlic and onion have increased in the market. Onion is being sold at Tk 50-60 per kg. And per kg increased by 10-20 taka, domestic garlic is sold at 150 taka per kg and imported garlic is sold at 200 taka per kg. Ginger is being sold at Tk 200 to Tk 220 per kg at the previous increased price.
