Santiago de Cuba is waiting for the latest anti-Covid-19 tests this Monday after an infected person was detected among its players, on the eve of the 60th National Baseball Series restarting this Tuesday.
The press revealed that outfielder Yeri Martínez tested positive after random PCR tests carried out on players returning from the Christmas holidays. The player was transferred to a hospital in the eastern capital and was asymptomatic according to local officials.
The National Series protocol indicates that, if there is at least one contagion, the rest of the team must be confined and subjected to PCR tests in their entirety. At the moment the rest of the team is isolated in the Sports Motel, next to the Guillermón Moncada stadium, waiting five days to repeat the test. It seems unlikely that the Santiago team will be able to travel to Nueva Gerona this week for their series against Isla de la Juventud.
The National Series enters its final qualifying round in search of the eight postseason teams. The Santiago contagion is the second recent episode after the outbreak in Industriales that caused gradual infection in 15 players, of which 12 have already been discharged. The Blues are also confident in the classification. This Sunday, Stayler Hernández, captain of the Industriales, criticized on state television what in his opinion was a lack of attention from baseball authorities towards the team. The Industriales players are staying at the “Las Terrazas” Hotel. Managers are expected to respond to criticism.
