Have you ever heard of myopia? That is a medical term for myopia and optometrist Rob van Visser Contact Lenses knows all about it. Myopia can cause problems, especially in children, if you don’t catch it in time. That is why Visser Contact Lenses organizes a free myopia consultation hour in Elst.
Visser Contact Lenses is the specialist in medical and commercial contact lenses. The branch in Elst can be found in the new Rijnstate hospital. “This means we have short lines of communication with the ophthalmologist and eye clinic,” says Rob.

Optometrist job
As an optometrist, Rob is the person who performs eye examinations. “What I do is a bit between an ophthalmologist and an optician,” he says. “I carry out checks, give advice and measure lenses if necessary. I really enjoy working with people and seeing them walk out the door happy, so this is the ideal position for me.”
Said is myopia
At Visser Contact Lenses they know a lot about myopia, or nearsightedness, among other things. Rob: “With myopia you have a longer eye than average. As a result, light rays do not fall properly on the retina. People who suffer from this can see well up close, but not far away. You correct that with a minus strength. Myopia is common in adults and children.”

Myopia in children
Especially in children, myopia can increase rapidly at a younger age if you do nothing about it. “It is therefore important that you are there early,” says Rob. “The younger a child has a negative strength and nothing is done about it, the greater the chance of a higher negative strength later in life.”
“In addition, your lifestyle can have an influence. Looking a lot at nearby objects, such as tablets and books, can increase myopia. Heredity also plays an important role. If one or both parents are nearsighted, your child is more at risk of becoming nearsighted. Extensive outdoor play has a positive effect on inhibiting myopia.”
Long term problems
According to Rob, waiting too long to tackle myopia in children can cause quite a few problems later in life. “Then you can think of glaucoma, but also retinal problems. It really threatens the development of good vision.”
Be there early
Because myopia must be identified early in children, Visser Contact Lenses holds open consultation hours for myopia in children at the Elst branch. On May 1, anyone who would like to have an eye test performed is welcome.
“You can then choose to make an appointment for lens fitting,” says Rob. “But that’s not necessary. The consultation hours are by appointment and in advance you will receive a questionnaire with topics such as myopia in the family and lifestyle.” You can already register for the consultation hours.

Myopia lenses
Does the measurement show that a child has myopia? “Then we discuss together what a follow-up could be. For example, we can then fit special myopia contact lenses,” says Rob. “The aim is to inhibit the growth of the eye, or myopia. We also work together with the orthotics department in the hospital.
