At the press conference, Nagis stated that the European Union’s (EU) decision to allow duty-free imports from Ukraine in 2022, which was intended to help preserve the functioning of the Ukrainian economy after Russia’s repeated invasion, has caused “large overproduction and significantly low prices” in the European agricultural market. .

He criticized the EU and the European Commission (EC) for failing to protect European farmers who cannot compete with cheaper imports and said Hungary would adopt additional protection measures “within its national competence”.

“Brussels and the EC have betrayed Hungarian farmers and are instead supporting Ukrainian oligarchs,” Nags stressed.

He also said that the Hungarian government has developed a five-point plan to help Hungarian farmers, including requiring sellers and logistics companies to report to the Hungarian government restricted products imported through Ukraine, regardless of the country of origin of those products.

The minister added that the restrictions will also apply to processed products made from Ukrainian grain.

Last year, Hungary imposed a ban on the import of 24 Ukrainian agricultural products, but said it would allow their transit through the country’s territory. The ban covered grains, oilseeds, flour, cooking oil and several meat products. Last month, the government removed Ukrainian natural honey from the list.

As reported, in March, the EU agreed to restore customs tariffs for the import of certain Ukrainian agricultural products. The agreement covers eggs, poultry, sugar, corn, oats, groats and honey. In the future, a quota will be set for these goods, up to which they can be sold in the EU without customs duty, but if the quota is exceeded, the customs duty will come into effect again.
