Today, Thursday April 11, according to the Calendaris of Saint Antipas Hieromartyr.
Hieromartyr of the Christian Church, whose memory is commemorated on April 11. This day is celebrated by those who bear the name Antipas or Antipas, as it has prevailed to be spelled. Saint Antipas, since 1967, has been the patron saint of Greek dentists, replacing Saint Apollonia (October 30), who remains the patron saint of dentists in Western Christianity. In the courtyard of the School of Dentistry of the University of Athens in Goudi, there is a temple dedicated to Agios Antipas.
Antipas lived during the reign of Emperor Domitian (81-96) and studied medicine at the famous school of Pergamum. It is not known when he became a Christian. He was, however, ordained bishop of Pergamum, probably by the evangelist John, when he was in exile in Patmos. Antipas had a difficult task, as in Pergamos “where Satan dwells” (Revelation, 2:13) the pagan element was strong.
