A work of art will represent the talent from Guatemala and the passion of its athletes in a exhibition which will take place in Paris during the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024. What a chilero! The piece was created by Rosana Lagosa Nicaraguan-Guatemalan artistand is titled «María Nicolasa».

The name refers to two Guatemalan athletes who have proudly worn their Mayan clothing during different races.

«María Nicolasa» It is a creation of the artist Rosana Lagosintended to pay tribute to two Guatemalan athletes who have challenged barriers and raised the pride of indigenous women by participating in various races wearing their traditional costumes.

The piece celebrates the effort, resistance and dedication of these runners and will be exhibited at the contest “Ethical Fashion Thriathlon”, created by Universal Love, a Paris-based organization dedicated to promoting ethical fashion. The competition replicates the format of a triathlon in which fashion students from France and international designers were challenged to create Adornments or decorative collars that combine sports elements with art, fashion, recycling and education.

The winning works will be part of the exhibition that will be held in Paris, during the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024. The piece made by Lagos will be exhibited along with 79 others Adornments, each reflecting the creativity and cultural diversity of its creators. The exhibition will take place from July 15 to August 15 at the Saint-Ouen ice rink.

About the piece inspired by Guatemalan athletes

Using her distinctive mixed media, the artist transformed an old towel into a canvas, adorning it with scraps of huipil and shoelaces, before painting geometric elements that intertwine with threads to create a visually captivating and one-of-a-kind work. Rosana Lagos created this piece in collaboration with Animazul, a platform that promotes Latin American fashion in Europe.

“María Nicolasa” stands out as a testimony of art’s ability to transcend borders and unite different aspects of the human experience. Through this work, Lagos not only celebrates sporting achievement, but also honors Guatemala’s rich cultural heritage and the women who defy expectations and break barriers.

About the artist

Lagos graduated as a graphic designer from the Rafael Landívar University and has specialized in art in several studios in Guatemala. Her work has been exhibited in several triathlons in the country and also in events held in Dubai and India.
