This outfit worn by Rishi Sunak during an interview in his office in London’s Downing Street is heating up the public’s emotions in Great Britain. The British Prime Minister even sent a “sincere apology” to the “Samba Community” on Wednesday.
The combination of shirt, chinos and the German shoe manufacturer’s sports shoes was not well received by many Brits: Rishi Sunak had destroyed the modern reputation of the fashion shoe. “In an attempt to present himself as young and hip, Rishi Sunak took an incredibly cool sneaker and ruined it for everyone,” wrote Britain’s GQ magazine. The Guardian also made an appeal to its readers: If they wore a pair of Adidas Samba, they should take off the shoes immediately and never wear them again. The model, which was even described as “the official shoe of the season,” is “suddenly not only uncool, but even a bit Tory,” the British paper refers to the Prime Minister’s party. The Daily Mail tabloid headlined an article with a user’s quote: “Rishi Sunak is being ripped off for ‘trying to appear normal’.”
Sunak, who is fighting for re-election with his Tories in the autumn general election, defended himself in an interview with LBC Radio on Wednesday: He has worn Adidas Samba all his life. “I am a long-time admirer.” And: He is amused that his appearance is attracting so much attention. (ed.)
