On Thursday, Washington vowed to impose more sanctions on Ethiopian officials, against the backdrop of the decision to expel 7 employees working in United Nations relief missions.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a press briefing that Washington “strongly condemns the expulsion of United Nations employees by the Ethiopian authorities.”

She added: “The White House threatens Ethiopian government officials with more US sanctions if they continue to obstruct the arrival of humanitarian aid to Tigray.”

Earlier today, Ethiopia announced the expulsion of 7 senior United Nations employees, and classified them as “undesirable persons.”

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said on its Twitter account that the expulsion of these high-level employees in UN agencies came on the grounds of “interference in the country’s internal affairs.”

The ministry called on the international staff to leave Ethiopian territory within 72 hours.
