Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun attended the Hyundai Motor Company press conference held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on the 4th (local time), a day before the opening of CES 2022, the world’s largest electronics, home appliance, and information technology (IT) exhibition, and presented Boston Dynamics’ 4. Hyundai Motor Group (005380) is entering the full-scale robot delivery business using Boston Dynamics’ four-legged robot dog ‘Spot’. We began to materialize the business by deploying spots at actual delivery sites. In the future, it is expected to be linked to the Purpose-Based Vehicle (PBV) project being promoted by Kia (000270).

According to related industries on the 12th, Hyundai Motor Group and CJ Korea Express (000120) will start a robot delivery service using Spot.

To this end, Hyundai Motor Group designated a townhouse in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, constructed by its affiliate Hyundai Engineering & Construction, as a pilot complex and conducted the first demonstration last month.

In the first demonstration video, Spot carrying a small delivery box drops the box at its destination. It looks like it avoids obstacles and goes down stairs on the way. Hyundai Motor Group plans to conduct additional tests in April to advance robot delivery.

Hyundai Motor Group’s robot delivery service is operated by its major affiliates, Kia and CJ Logistics. Spot travels with CJ Logistics’ delivery vehicle, and Spot gets off instead of the delivery driver to deliver the parcel to the door. This is a non-face-to-face delivery service where Spot moves directly to your door.

Spot is the representative model of Boston Dynamics, a robot development company of Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai Motor Group acquired Boston Dynamics from Softbank in 2020, and at the time of the acquisition, Chairman Chung Eui-sun personally donated 240 billion won of his own money. After the acquisition, Chairman Chung Eui-sun stood on the podium with Spot at the 2022 CES and attracted attention.

The industry believed that Hyundai Motor Group was considering a ‘last mile’ delivery business using spots. ‘DAL-e Delivery’, whose design and video were recently released by Hyundai Motor Group, is also a delivery robot that focuses on last mile delivery. Hyundai Motor Group will use Dal-i Delivery in ‘Factorial Seongsu’ starting in the second quarter of this year.

Last mile delivery refers to the time right before the product is delivered directly to the customer. From the supplier’s perspective, more than half of logistics costs are invested, and it is considered the most promising field among future robot delivery businesses.

An official in the logistics industry said, “The robot delivery service that the industry is planning to introduce will be moved through hubs and networks built by logistics companies across the country to reach the destination, and the last mile, which requires the most manpower, will be handled by humans and robots together.” “If it is commercialized, efficiency such as speed will be greatly improved, and labor cost savings can also be expected,” he said.
