The eyes can reveal a lot about the health of our brains. Indeed, eye problems can be one of the earliest signs of cognitive decline. Our latest study shows that a loss of visual sensitivity can predict dementia 12 years before it is diagnosed. While these findings are promising, the researchers emphasize that more studies are needed before eye tests can be used routinely for early detection of Alzheimer’s. But it does underline the link between visual problems and an increased risk of later dementia.
