Berlin urged German citizens to leave Ukraine | News from Germany about Germany | DW

Following the United States and other countries, Germany called on its citizens to leave Ukraine amid fears of Russian troops invading the country. The Foreign Ministry in Berlin pointed out on Saturday, February 12, that the citizens of Germany should weigh whether there is an “urgent need” in their presence on the territory of Ukraine.

The message of the ministry indicates that the Consulate General in Dnipro is temporarily stopping work. The dpa agency reports that it is moving to Lviv to keep the diplomatic mission staff away from the line of contact between Ukrainian government forces and Moscow-backed separatist forces.

More and more countries are calling on their citizens to leave Ukraine

Over the past 24 hours, at least 18 countries have already called on their citizens to refrain from traveling to Ukraine or leave its territory due to the threat of a military conflict with Russia. In addition to Germany, the United States, Australia, Great Britain, Belgium, Greece, Israel, Canada, Latvia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, North Macedonia, Finland, Montenegro, Estonia, Japan and South Korea made relevant statements.

In most cases, these are recommendations. But the South Korean Foreign Ministry imposed a travel ban on Ukraine and ordered its citizens to leave the country or face punishment under local law.

A day earlier, US President Joe Biden urged Americans to leave Ukraine.

West fears Russian invasion of Ukraine

In recent months, relations between Russia and Western countries have remained tense. The West is talking about the concentration of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border and the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the second half of 2021 and early 2022, the Russian Federation deployed more than 100 thousand military personnel to the annexed Crimea and to the border with Ukraine. The Kremlin denies plans for military aggression.

The January series of talks between Russia and the United States, NATO and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe did not bring the desired results. The West is calling on Moscow to withdraw troops from the Ukrainian border and is threatening unprecedented sanctions. Russia, on the other hand, accuses Western countries of arming Ukraine and conducting maneuvers near the borders of the Russian Federation.
