On that occasion, Paulius Jankūnas, the head of the Žalgiris organization, visited the Kaunas “Žalgiris” podcast studio, who not only summarized the past part of the season, but also looked at the rest and revealed the details of the upcoming season’s team.
One of them is changes in the team management. From now on, P. Jankūnas will assume the position of club president, while Gediminas Navickas, who has been the head of the youth team program until now, will become the team’s sports director. His position in the youth system will be taken over by Andrius Gopenas.
“Gedimin joined the team management and will be with the team until the end of the season. He needs to understand all the processes, see how the team lives, what it breathes. You need to communicate with coaches and players. He needs to understand how things work in the first team, because life is different in the youth system. He will also be around for player selections and next season’s squad formation. He will see everything up close and everything will officially come together after the season. These two months are for him to adjust and get used to the changes,” the club manager said.
According to P. Jankūnas, the club is currently working very actively in the player market and is looking at the composition of the upcoming season.
“Now is the working year itself, and before me “Žalgiris” started these works quite early, because contracts can be extended at a better price than in the summer. The work is in full swing, we have selected the players we would like to have in the next season’s team. There are conversations with both agents and players,” said a long-time Zalgiris resident.
One of the hottest topics in Lithuania and European basketball is the fate of Keenan Evans in Žalgiris.
“The club is doing everything possible to keep him. We know very well who this player is and at what level he plays. The main teams of the Euroleague are fighting for him. We’re in a lot of contact with both Keenan and his agent, and we’re really going out of our way to keep him. I don’t know what his decision will be,” said P. Jankūnas.
In the second part of the recording, intended only for “Žalgiris Insider” subscribers, P. Jankūnas answered their questions.
