The inspiring story of how Makario’S Artesanos came to be

Its founder is Manuela Tecún, a visionary entrepreneur originally from Chichicastenango, Quiché. The Guatemalan woman was born into a family of limited resources, which made her work various jobs. This was a situation that she continued by having a large family.

Without giving up, the Guatemalan woman was looking for different ways to earn income that would allow her to get ahead. When one of her daughters learned crochet at school, Manuela decided to combine her knowledge of making huipils with this technique and began making the hacky Sacks. Because Panajachel is a very touristy place, she decided to move to sell her crafts in the local market. One day, while selling and making one of the crochet balls, a unique opportunity presented itself when an American importer crossed his path and was impressed by the quality and craftsmanship of his products. The foreigner went from buying a dozen to placing an order for a thousand pieces.

At that moment, the Guatemalan woman returned to the place where she was born so that people from her community could get involved in the project. This is how the history of this company began, which has brought a little piece of Guatemala to stores in the United States and Europe, and which has also presented its designs on international catwalks.
