Sona Ghazaryan, a member of the Standing Committee on European Integration of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, deputy of the “Civil Agreement” faction, made a speech at the conference of the EU Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) held in Brussels. The deputy noted in his speech.

“First of all, let me express our gratitude to the presiding trio and the Belgian Parliament for inviting the Armenian delegation to participate in this important platform.

The equal representation of women and men in institutional politics is a very important topic for us, because only with proportional representation is it possible to achieve real democracy.

After the Velvet Revolution, we made changes in the legislative field. At the moment, we have 30 percent representation of women in parliament and local self-government bodies.

Another important step was the amendment of the Law on Parties with a clear message about the importance of inclusiveness in the governing bodies of political parties, as political parties are the gateways to institutional politics, especially in countries with a parliamentary form of government.

The ruling party is also working on internal charters to implement gender quotas in its governing bodies, both nationally and locally.

We are also working on ideas to encourage women’s participation in the party through policies beyond quotas.

We believe that the legal framework is necessary, but not sufficient. We also need to encourage women, support them, because every woman in institutional politics paves the way for other women.”
