The Danish government is extending temporary border controls with Germany by six months. This was done for security reasons, Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said in a press release, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
This temporary measure was due to expire in May. “The safety of the Danes is the government’s main priority. The cabinet assesses that the current threat landscape makes it necessary to maintain temporary controls on the border with Germany,” Hummelgaard explained.
The Justice Minister noted that border controls should be seen in light of the fact that the terrorist threat “remains serious and is increasing”, as a result of, among other things, incidents of religious book burnings and conflict in the Middle East.
In 2023, the European Commission raised concerns about the legality of introducing long-term border controls. The Danish government uses the expression “reintroduces” to describe this measure.
Denmark introduced border controls with Germany for the first time in early 2016 in response to the refugee crisis at the end of 2015. Later, the reason given was the “security and migration situation” and the threat of organized crime and terrorism.
According to Danish police, from July 21 to October 24, 483 demonstrations involving the burning of books or flags took place across the country. The Danish Parliament voted in December to ban “inappropriate handling of texts of great religious significance to the recognized community of believers,” including Koran burnings.
