Various government institutions carry out actions to prepare for the rainy season. Officials who make up the National Civil Protection Commission held a press conference to report on these measures.
“While it is true, winter has not begun and we are waiting to see what the meeting of meteorological specialists will tell us, we have had some storms and based on that we moved forward, as is characteristic of the Government, in order to be able to reduce the impact or mitigate as we technically say, developing some actions,” explained the director of Civil Protection, Luis Alonso Amaya.
The official explained that they have focused on mitigating risks in the El Garrobo stream, El Talapo, the Ilohuapa river and the La Mascota stream.
The intervened streams, at least four, are tributaries of rivers such as the Acelhuate that also function as natural drains of the San Salvador volcano and in summer, weeds tend to grow on the banks and in some cases when they are uprooted, in the first floods. , causes blockage and that is what we want to avoid, added Amaya.
First response institutions are also waiting for the winds that started yesterday, hence the call from the authorities to avoid burning that causes forest and brush fires.
“Yesterday we attended a total of 51 fires, that is a very important fact given that fires in our country range between approximately 20 and 35 daily,” specified the director of the Fire Department, Baltazar Solano.
Solano added that from January 1 to April 12, 2,771 fires have been recorded, 15% more than the same period in 2023, when there were 2,409.
