Last year, the multiple vice-champion “Livonia” rugby players won regular silver medals in the national championship and took third place in the Latvian Cup. Previously, the South African specialist Antonio Joao de Carvalho worked with the women from Livonia, to whom the team expresses great gratitude for the work he put in last season. The team also thanked the captain of the 2023 season team, Laura Malyukova, and welcomed the new captain, Alisa Lakija Şirvi, and her assistant, Anna Ines Tutani.

The team had decided to cooperate with a local coach in the new season. “Livonia” evaluated possible candidates from Latvia and chose Baldones and national team leader Elmārs Šefanovski as the most suitable. “Evaluating who could be such a powerful coach, the first thing that came to mind was Elmars Šefanovskis. We arranged a meeting with him and agreed. That’s why we are very satisfied and happy about it”, the manager and player of the “Livonia” women’s team Evija Krallish does not hide her satisfaction.

“Elmārs is not only one of the best rugby players in Latvia, but also an expert who knows how to conduct the training process correctly, because he also works with young people. It will definitely be a huge contribution to our team this year,” says Krallisha very optimistically.

“This is the missing piece of the puzzle that was missing in our women’s team – a good, stable coach who can give his knowledge. I would like to add that a good coach is not only someone who contributes with his rugby knowledge, but also outside the field,” says the manager of “Livonia” and adds that there has already been the first gathering event, which was successful, because the players and the coach have quickly “connected” and an interaction has developed.

“I know that we are on the right path, and I believe that Elmars Šefanovskis is the best option and choice. And in every other way, he will complement our team, and I believe that together we will succeed, maybe not this season, but in the next one as well,” Evija Kralliš is convinced.

During the winter period, due to several players’ injuries from the previous season, training attendance has been relatively poor. Some of the “old” players have left, but several new ones have arrived. During the winter season, training has taken place three times a week, including athletics, weight room training to strengthen the internal muscles to strengthen the body and reduce the chance of injuries this season, as well as rugby training.

“At the moment, rugby training is taking place and we continue to train in the weight room as well. When the first stage of the Latvian championship approaches, there will be even more training,” emphasizes Kralliša.

Speaking about the goal, the team manager states that the primary task is to preserve the team, which is not so easy to do in women’s rugby here in Latvia. “Since our composition has changed – several previous ones have left and many new ones have arrived, we will try to keep the team, so this season our goal is to keep the women’s team. Of course, like every team in sports, we would also like to get the highest possible place, but this is not a priority this season,” emphasizes Evija.

The team is waiting for the return of the injured players and hopes for a new signing. Sindija Shirak, Madara Dārzniece, Alice Lakija Širve, Anna Inese Tutāne have remained from the core of the team. Izabella Kvecko, who has been with the team since the beginning, will also join.
