On the 14th, after Iran’s airstrike against Israel, President Yoon Seok-yeol gathered officials from the government and related organizations and instructed them to “operate intensively a government-wide analysis and management system related to international oil prices, energy supply and demand, and supply chains.”
According to the President’s Office, President Yoon made this announcement after presiding over the ‘Emergency Economic and Security Meeting Due to the Middle East Crisis’ at the Yongsan Presidential Office this afternoon. This meeting was held to comprehensively examine the impact of Iran’s attack on Israel on the international security and economic situation and on our security and economy and discuss future response directions.
At the meeting, President Yoon asked, “We must thoroughly examine the situational outlook and risk factors for our economy and security and operate thorough preparedness plans so that we can respond quickly and effectively to any situation that develops in the future.”
He then ordered, “We must thoroughly prepare safety measures for our ships sailing in nearby areas, as well as the safety of our citizens, companies, and diplomatic missions located in Israel and the Middle East.”
At the meeting on this day, the government included Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yeol, Minister of Unification Kim Young-ho, Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Kang Do-hyung, National Intelligence Service Director Cho Tae-yong, Financial Services Commission Chairman Kim Joo-hyun, Bank of Korea Governor Lee Chang-yong, Office for Government Policy Coordination Director Kang Kyung-seong, and Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. The First Vice Minister of Resources attended.
In the Presidential Office, Chief of Staff Lee Kwan-seop, National Security Office Director Jang Ho-jin, Policy Director Seong Tae-yoon, Senior Secretary to the President for Economic Affairs Park Chun-seop, National Security Office 1st Deputy Director Kim Tae-hyo, National Security Office 2nd Deputy Director In Seong-hwan, and National Security Office 3rd Deputy Director Wang Yun-jong were present.
Participants assessed that uncertainty in the global economy is growing due to geopolitical instability in the Middle East, and decided to promptly respond to the impact on the Korean economy, such as supply chains and prices, while closely monitoring the ripple effects of movements in international oil prices and exchange rates.
