According to him, even after the legal act enters into force, the member states will have another 2 years to make a decision.
As previously announced, the European Parliament (EP) approved stricter rules on migration and asylum in the European Union (EU) on Wednesday. The basis of the legal act is a mandatory system of solidarity, according to which all EU member states must assume a certain responsibility for the consideration of asylum applications. If an EU member state does not want to accept asylum seekers, it must provide alternative assistance, such as paying financial contributions to a support fund.
After this agreement enters into force, Lithuania would have to accept 158 new arrivals per year, or pay about 3 million per year. euros.
“The standard period for implementation is 24 months. After the adoption of the pact and regulations in the Council of Ministers, after the announcement of the pact at the end of June, we will have 24 months, during which we will decide which option is more suitable for Lithuania”, A. Abramavičius said to LRT radio on Monday.
“The regulation will enter into force only after two years, but Lithuania will be able to join earlier if it expresses such a will,” he emphasized.
ELTA recalls that the reform includes faster screening of illegal arrivals, the creation of detention centers at the border, accelerated deportation of asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected and a solidarity mechanism to reduce pressure on southern countries receiving huge migrant flows.
The compromise announced on Wednesday includes a number of additions and tightening of existing rules to reduce illegal migration into the EU.
Reforms have been intensively coordinated since 2015, when a record number of migrants arrived in the EU. While countries with right-wing governments, such as Hungary, have strongly advocated tightening the rules, aid organizations and the European left have expressed concern about the deterioration of human rights.
