V. Zelensky was quoted by G. Erdan after the attack on Israel organized by Iran on Sunday. Iran launched 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles at Israel early Sunday. The vast majority of drones and rockets were shot down by the Israel Defense Forces. Several ballistic missiles entered Israeli territory, causing minor damage to the Nevatim Air Force Base.
Following this attack on Israel, the United Nations Council held an emergency session. The organization’s secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, reportedly opened the meeting with a warning that the Middle East was “at a precipice.”
Iran carried out the attack after the April 1st Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria. The strike was in response to attacks by Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah fighters.
After the Iranian attack, V. Zelenskii hastily announced that he condemns such actions. He stressed that Ukraine was familiar with the “horror of similar attacks” and called on allies to do more to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
On Sunday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog equated the Iranian attack to a declaration of war.
“We are here to defend Europe against this evil empire and it is time that this was made clear.” The time has come for the world to oppose this evil empire in Tehran and make it clear to the Iranian regime that it cannot be ignored, that it is unacceptable,” said I. Herzog.
According to the Kyiv Independent, Iran supplied Moscow with Shahed kamikaze drones after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Russians continue to use the latter, targeting cities and infrastructure.
Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR) said Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group are training Russian drone operators in Syria.
“Kyiv Independent” also points out that Israel has not taken sides for a long time after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has not provided significant support to Ukraine until now.
