M. Alekna threw the discus with the best attempt of 74.35 m.

He improved by 27 cm the performance of Jurgen Schult, who held the world record until then (74.08 m).

“It was an amazing shot, the conditions were really good. I just enjoyed this competition, I am very happy that I managed to achieve the world record”, said M. Alekna after the record performance.

The Lithuanian made a historic throw at the “Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational” held in Ramona (USA).

The Lithuanian knew that it would be possible to try to “catch” the world record in them, because the town of Ramona is characterized by strong winds, which, in case of a successful throw, send the disc flying forward another 2-3 meters.

“I knew the conditions were going to be good for the record, I knew I could throw far, but I didn’t put any pressure on myself, I tried to enjoy the moment and it just happened,” he added to Sports Illustrated.

Ms. Alekna also said that she received a congratulatory message from her father, Virgilijus Alekna.

“He wrote me that I did a great job. He, like me, is not a talkative person”, said M. Alekna.

During the entire history of discus throwing, more than 73 m has already been thrown by Mykolas, German J. Schultas, M. Alekna’s father V. Alekna – 73.88 m and Estonian Gerdas Kanteris – 73.38 m.
