A scandal broke out in Dupnitsa today after more than 10 trees were cut down in the square and around the post office in the presence of the mayor Parvan Dangov. The deputy from GERB Radoslava Chekanska, the chairman of ObS Kostadin Kostadinov and councilors arrived at the scene, who were perplexed as to why trees were being cut down. A report was submitted to the RIOSV and the regional governor.
The Municipality explained that it has won a project under the Bulgaria-Macedonia Cross-Border Cooperation program to flower the space in front of the municipal administration building. 10 days ago, a landscape architect visited the Municipality for the preparation of the work project and recommended that the terrain be prepared for flowering by removing dangerous tree species such as pine, linden, etc.
“This space, according to the architectural design and layout of the building, is for flowers, not for tall trees. Three of the trees have such a root system that lifted the tiles. The tree in front of the Municipality has dry branches that the wind breaks and can fall on the heads of citizens. Apart from that, in front of and behind the Post building, we have cut down trees that are literally resting on the facade of the building,” commented the mayor of Dupnitsa, Parvan Dangov, regarding the many comments on social networks about the actions of the Municipality. The project planned to plant flowers , which will be renewed periodically. “At the moment, there are stray dogs sleeping on the square. Not to mention that drug addicts are gathering and having orgies. Today we threw out more than 20 jugs of energy drinks and syringes “, Mr. Dangov also announced.
He clarified that according to the opinion of the landscape architect, with whom the Municipality has a contract, the planting of tall tree vegetation next to buildings is not allowed, which may also endanger people crossing the pedestrian alley.
On the occasion of the attacks regarding the felling of trees, Dangov explained that since the beginning of the year alone, more than 3,000 saplings have been purchased and planted in different areas of the Dupnitsa municipality.
“The removal of the dangerous trees started today, on Sunday, because fewer people pass through the area. The Municipality workers are working overtime and I was personally present because I expected there to be an escalation of tension. Apart from that, two citizens of Dupnitsa cursed and insulted me, for which I have already filed a report with the police,” the mayor of Dupnitsa was categorical.
From the KOD party, from which the chairman of the Municipal Council is, they even demanded the resignation of the mayor. “We are morally obliged as citizens and politicians to react, especially after his actions today with the cutting of 13 trees in the ideal center. This so-called project was not subject to public discussion, the citizens and the Municipal Council were not aware of it and they were not given the opportunity to express their opinion. The removal of healthy, long-standing and emblematic trees for the city, and that on a day off, without presentation of felling permits and an opinion from an ecologist, is considered only as self-management and abuse of power.” says in the statement.
