Anthony Gordon, Fabian Schär and Alexander Isak (two goals) ensured a humiliating Spurs away defeat.

The loss ensures that the London team will have the challenging task of defending fourth place at the start of the season. The club still has the advantage of facing Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

– Terrible defensive play throughout the match. Tottenham are lucky that it will only be 4-0 here, says former Tottenham player Steffen Iversen in Viaplay’s studio at the end of the match.

Aston Villa have the same number of points as Spurs, but have a slightly easier end to the season. On Sunday, however, they will have a tough job away to Arsenal.

Spurs hung on for the first half hour of Saturday’s game, then everything would unravel in one nightmarish minute. The visitors’ defense had huge problems with Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, who provided two lightning-quick scores.

First he fought for the ball and played Alexander Isak through. The Swede turned away Micky van de Ven and hammered the ball into the near corner.

The TV pictures had barely finished showing the replays from the first goal, before 2-0 was in the net. Gordon intercepted a weak back pass and also turned Van de Ven away. Guglielmo Vicario got a few fingers at the end, but was unable to prevent the second goal of the match.

A difficult start before the second half got even worse when Isak increased it to 3-0 five minutes after the break. Bruno Guimarães played the Swede through perfectly, and alone with the goalkeeper the striker was safe.

Just before the end, Schär headed in the game’s fourth.

Newcastle have not lived up to expectations this season and are some way behind in the battle for the top four. The club is also in the fight for European play next season and has a lot to play for in the run-up to the season.

There they have the opportunity to climb the table. Only two of six games (against Manchester United and Brighton) are against opposition from the upper half of the table.
