After more than a full decade in which Samsung enjoyed almost undisputed control at the top of the worldwide smartphone sales chart, it was ousted at the end of 2023. The new control was actually the great rival Apple, which for the first time occupied the first global place. But now new delivery figures are being published that reveal what happened in the first quarter of 2024 and it does not bode well for the iPhone maker.

Both Apple and Samsung have a problem

The international research company IDC has published its preliminary results for smartphone sales worldwide in the first quarter of 2024. In first place is Samsung, which managed to sell 60.1 million devices, which gave it a market share of 20.8%, and in second place is Apple with 50.1 million devices, which are approx. -17.3% of sales. In other words, Samsung once again takes the top spot by a large margin over Apple. However, it is important to pay attention to the background: Apple released the iPhone 15 at the end of September, while Samsung released the Galaxy S24 in January, so Apple is already well past the sales boost it receives during the launch and holiday periods, and Samsung is enjoying the sales and hype advantage of the series Her new one that was available throughout almost the entire quarter. In 2023, Apple’s achievement was even more significant, as it was measured throughout the year 2023, and not just in the last quarter. This year Apple is also expected to release a new iPhone SE and the iPhone 16, so it still has quite a bit of ammunition for the rest of the year.

Despite the recovery of Samsung and Apple, the report reveals two trends that should concern the major manufacturers. Compared to the corresponding data from last year, Apple is in a significant decrease of 9.6% in sales, and Samsung is in a slight decrease of 0.7% – which indicates that both still fail to grow their sales year after year. In third place, if you were wondering, you will find Xiaomi, which jumped by 33.8% and sold 40.8 million devices, and the big star of this quarter, the Chinese Transsion, which stands behind unknown brands in the West, and sold 28.5, which is an 84.9% jump in sales compared to last year. OPPO rounds out the top 5 with 25.2 million devices, a decrease of 8.5% compared to last year.

It also appears from IDC data that in the first month of 2024, 289.4 million devices were sold worldwide, compared to 268.5 million devices in 2023. This means that the smartphone market seems to be finally recovering from the sharp declines it has suffered in recent years. IDC estimates that this trend will continue despite the global economic challenges.
