Bayer Leverkusen really did it and won the championship crown five game days before the end of the season. The dethroned champion from Munich also congratulates.
Those responsible at Bayern Munich congratulated Bayer Leverkusen on winning the German championship – but immediately announced an attack on the cup they had long subscribed to for the coming season.
“The title goes to Leverkusen absolutely deservedly: it is the reward for an outstanding season and great football,” President Herbert Hainer was quoted as saying in a club statement. FC Bayern’s goal is now: “The bowl has to go back to Munich! See you in the new season.”
Bayer 04 Leverkusen broke FC Bayern’s long-term dominance in the Bundesliga with the first championship title in the club’s history. The team of coach-shooting star Xabi Alonso secured the first of three possible titles this season with a 5-0 win against Werder Bremen on matchday 29 on Sunday. Previously, the record champions from Munich, who were weak this season, had become German champions eleven times in a row.

Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of FC Bayern, also praised a “flawless season so far” for Leverkusen, who were unbeaten after 29 match days: “The team has shown courage, class and, above all, consistency and has therefore deservedly become German champions in 2024.” But one thing is certain: “We are taking this as a direct incentive, we will work even harder and will not rest until the bowl comes back to Säbener Straße in Munich.”
Sports director Max Eberl praised: “Your football has thrilled the Bundesliga. FC Bayern’s series has broken, but we will now do everything we can to attack again.”
