National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo will visit Washington, DC, USA on the 15th (local time) for a three-day, two-night trip.

Chairman Kim arrived in the United States this morning with a delegation consisting of about 10 lawmakers from the ruling and opposition parties.

It has been five years since the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly visited Washington, D.C., following then-Chairman Moon Hee-sang in 2019.

Representatives from the ruling party included Jeong Jin-seok, Joo Ho-young, Chu Kyung-ho, and Choi Hyeong-doo, and from the opposition party, Ahn Gyu-baek, Yun Ho-jung, Han Jeong-ae, Song Gap-seok, and So Byeong-cheol.

Chairman Kim and lawmakers from the ruling and opposition parties will meet with U.S. lawmakers for three days and two nights to discuss ways to establish a permanent communication channel between the Korean and U.S. parliaments.

Chairman Kim entered the United States on this day and told reporters, “When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Korea, we each promised to create an alliance of Korean and American lawmakers, and we passed it unanimously in February of last year with the ruling and opposition parties unanimously,” and told U.S. lawmakers, “The United States also has an alliance of Korean and American lawmakers.” He said he plans to urge, “Let’s make the federation live up to its promises.”

Chairman Kim explained that in a situation where Korean companies are increasing their presence in the United States, it is necessary to consult with the state government rather than the federal government to resolve on-site difficulties, and the problem can be resolved through U.S. lawmakers.

On the 16th, representatives from the ruling and opposition parties will hold a ‘Korea-US Friendship Event Reception’ and meet with Rep. Lee Hee-hoe and major think tank figures. On the same day, a signboard hanging ceremony will be held for the Korea-US Congressional Exchange Center.

Chairman Kim explained, “The purpose is to discuss issues between Korea and the United States together at the exchange center,” adding, “Since the Washington branch offices of our companies are all nearby, communication will be easy and problems will be resolved immediately.”

Meanwhile, in response to a question regarding the size of the Samsung Electronics semiconductor subsidy announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce on this day, Chairman Kim said that it was at the level expected and that he did not believe he was disadvantaged.

Chairman Kim commented, “I think this reflects the U.S. government’s policy intention to join hands with companies leading the world’s production artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.”
