The Ministry of Economy and Industry and the Israel Consumer Council launched an operation to check and compare the prices of the ‘Passover basket’. The current test, the third in number, was carried out on 15.4 on the price data on the days 14-15.4 (the first test was carried out on 2.4 and the second on 8.4).

The tests are conducted in 54 nationwide chains and on their websites, and are based on price data processed after being received from the Pricez website. This test will provide consumers with information about the price differences and a comparison of the cost of the basket between the chains. The data can be found on the websites of the Ministry of Economy and Industry and the Consumer Council.

There are 155 products in the Passover basket: food products unique to Passover (such as matzoh, Passover cookies, etc.), cleaning products, as well as food products that are bought all year round but are bought in larger quantities for the holiday (such as fish and poultry meat, fruits and vegetables).

As of 4/15/24, the cheapest chain is Rami Levy, the most expensive is PM:AM, a gap of about 35% was found between the expensive chain and the cheapest chain, which is about NIS 1002, in some products price differences of more than 2 times were found! Between the cheapest and most expensive chain, the average price of the basket of products became more expensive by 0.5% compared to the average price of the basket published on 8.4.24 (which was cheaper by 0.5% compared to the basket on 2.4.24), the test refers to 155 products, in 54 chains, which have a national distribution (including websites), among the findings: frozen green peas a gap of 190%, fresh beef/veal asado 146%, chocolate covered matzah cookies 122%.

Michal Fink, VP of Strategy and Policy at the Ministry of Economy and Industry: “Consumer vigilance and determination is necessary to reduce the cost of living. Against the background of the basket data, we recommend consumers to compare prices between different products, to split purchases between different chains if there are significant differences between products, not to be tempted by well-known brands and to try new products as well, to shop online, compare in apps and more. The fight against the cost of living is shared by the government and consumers, and achievements in it will come through joint action.”

Attorney Sharon Meir, CEO of the Consumer Council: “Especially in the run-up to the holiday when expenses are higher than usual, act like wise consumers: prepare your shopping list ahead of time, it is desirable and possible to do your shopping ahead of time to avoid price increases as you get closer to the holiday. Compare prices between The chains and between the brands, and as much as possible split up the shopping. The struggle with the cost of living is largely under the control of the consumers – be wise consumers.”
