Yuhan Corporation announced on the 16th that it held the ’57th Yuhan Medical Awards Ceremony’ with the Seoul Metropolitan Medical Association on the 15th at the Grand Ballroom of the Chosun Hotel in Sogong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. The awards ceremony was attended by key officials, including Kim Yeol-hong, president of Yuhan Corporation’s R&D department, and Hwang Gyu-seok, president of the Seoul Metropolitan Medical Association. The Yuhan Medical Award is the oldest medical award in Korea. It is considered the most prestigious academic award in Korea, producing more than 100 winners representing the domestic medical community. It was enacted in 1967 with the purpose of laying the foundation for future medical development and encouraging medical scientists to research. It is sponsored by Yuhan Corporation and hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Medical Association.

The grand prize for this year’s Yuhan Medical Award went to Professor Nam Hyo-seok of the Department of Neurology at Yonsei University Medical School (Severance Hospital). It was found that conventional blood pressure control is more effective than lowering blood pressure excessively after intra-arterial blood vessel recanalization treatment.

The Young Medical Scholar Award was awarded to Seok Jun, Assistant Professor, Department of Dermatology, Chung-Ang University (Chung-Ang University Hospital), and Young-Chan Kim, Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University (Seoul National University Hospital). Assistant Professor Seok Jun produced the world’s first research result showing that the virtual memory T cell group can induce alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease. Assistant Professor Kim Young-chan demonstrated through research that the dura plays an important role in the movement of immune cells and infectious agents due to differences in barriers between each tissue at the border of the central nervous system.

The grand prize winner will receive a prize of 50 million won, and the Young Medical Scientist Award winner will receive a prize of 15 million won. In this year’s Yuhan Medical Award review, winners were selected covering major fields such as internal medicine, surgery, basic medicine, and support departments.

Yuhan Corporation R&D President Kim Yeol-hong said, “We will continue to strive to ensure that the Yuhan Medical Award realizes the creative research results of medical staff working hard on medical education and research and contributes to the infinite development of the medical field.”
