Half of the 16 people in the meeting with 4th term or higher are from Yeongnam.
“We do not take responsibility even for the worst defeat” within the party.

The general election backdrop is still the same. The People Power Party, which suffered a crushing defeat in the April 10 general election, held a meeting with those elected to four or more terms at the People Power Party floor leader’s office in Yeouido, Seoul on the 15th. As if reflecting the chaotic mood in the party following the crushing defeat, leading lawmakers are looking in different directions. Behind the attendees, the phrase ‘2024, do you promise to become the people’s power?’ remains in the background that the People Power Party used before the general election. “There was no intense discussion about analyzing the cause of the crushing defeat or how to resolve the party.” (4th term People Power Party member-elect)

Five days after the ruling party suffered the worst defeat in constitutional history in the April 10th general election, a meeting of senior elected officials of the People Power Party for four or more terms was held on the 15th, but there was no thorough analysis of the cause of the defeat, no sad message of reflection, and no resolution to resolve the crisis. It is reported that it was completed in just one hour. The senior leaders only took turns telling their stories and there was no discussion. Yoon Jae-ok, floor leader and acting party leader, met with reporters after the meeting and said, “We will analyze the cause (of the defeat) at an appropriate time.” There was criticism within the party that “no one is properly responsible for even the worst defeat.”

The senior meeting held on this day included floor leader Yoon, from the metropolitan area, Na Kyung-won (Dongjak-eul, Seoul), Ahn Cheol-soo (Bundang-gap, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do), Sang-hyeon Yoon (Dong-Michuhol-eul, Incheon) from the Yeongnam region, and Park Dae-chul (Jinju-gap, Gyeongnam) from the Yeongnam region. ), Lee Heon-seung (Busan Jin-eul, Busan), and Kwon Seong-dong (Gangneung, Gangwon-do), who are pro-Yoon faction members, attended. President-elect Kim Ki-hyun (Ulsan Nam) and Joo Ho-young (Daegu Suseong-gap) did not attend. Even in a situation where there was criticism of ‘the collapse of the metropolitan area – Yeongnam United Liberal Democrats’, it was pointed out that the meeting was out of touch with the sense of crisis within the party as eight of the attendees, half of those who had served four or more terms, were members of the Yeongnam district. An elected representative from the metropolitan area said, “Even after the crushing defeat in the Gangseo-gu mayor by-election in Seoul last year, the Yeongnam lawmakers were complacent and did not change much.”

It is reported that it was mainly lawmakers from the metropolitan area who discussed solutions. President-elect Sang-Hyun Yoon, who was elected by 1,025 votes, is reported to have claimed, “We must publish a white paper for the general election and reflect desperately.” President-elect Ahn Cheol-soo is said to have proposed, “Let’s create a place to gather the unsuccessful candidates and listen to their stories.”

However, as it was carried out without discussion, the method and schedule for maintaining the leadership system were not outlined. They only reached a consensus on the need to form a ‘management-type’ emergency response committee to prepare for the national convention, but they could not decide when and how to form the emergency committee or when the national convention would be held. It is also undecided whether floor leader Yoon will form an emergency committee or hand it over to the next floor leader. If the emergency committee is launched, it will be the fourth ruling party emergency committee since the inauguration of the Yoon Seok-yeol government.

First of all, the party leadership plans to continue further discussions at the elected general meeting held on the 16th, but it is expected that it will not be easy to come up with a solution. This is because factions such as pro-yoon and Bi-yoon (Bi Yoon Seok-yeol) may engage in heated debate at the general meeting of elected officials, where 90 elected representatives from constituencies and 18 proportional representatives gather. A party leadership official said, “It is not easy to reach a conclusion in a meeting of more than 100 people,” and added, “We will listen to the opinions of the elected members as much as possible and move in a direction that preserves the will of the majority as much as possible.”
