Seoul Metropolitan Opera ‘La Traviata·Chunhee’
Performance at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts from 25th to 28th
Violetta, the heroine of Verdi’s opera ‘La Traviata’, comes wearing a hanbok.
From the 25th to the 28th, the Seoul Metropolitan Opera will perform ‘La Traviata’, one of the most box-office works in world opera history, on the stage of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts under the title ‘La Traviata/Chunhee’. Chunhee (椿姬) is a name that has been familiar to more than two generations since the domestic premiere of this opera in 1948, and refers to ‘The Camellia Woman’, the title of the original novel.
In this performance, the setting was moved to Gyeongseong (Seoul) in the early 20th century. The heroine ‘Violetta’ is portrayed as a strong woman who disguises herself as a gisaeng to raise funds for the restoration of national sovereignty. His lover, Alfredo, is a young man in a suit who has finished studying abroad, and Alfredo’s father, Germont, is portrayed as a ‘nobleman’ with strong Confucian values. Director Lee Rae-i, who is currently active mainly in Germany, will direct the production, and Chungbuk National University professor Cho Man-soo, an expert on French plays, will participate as a dramaturg (an expert who gives advice on plays).
At a press conference and production presentation held at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Artist Lounge on the afternoon of the 16th, Park Hye-jin, director of the Seoul Metropolitan Opera, said, “The drama ‘Mr. Sunshine’ reminded me of ‘La Traviata’ set in Gyeongseong. “You will be able to experience a time when foreign and traditional cultures intersect and meet each other, such as the meeting of Western-style houses and traditional houses, and the meeting of Western clothes and Hanbok,” he said.
Director Lee Rae-i said, “I was attracted to Director Park’s suggestion to substitute the situation in Europe at the time of the creation of La Traviata with the turbulence set in Gyeongseong in the early 20th century, so I readily agreed. “I will do a good job of expressing the conflict between Violetta’s inherent values and the value of personal freedom that she learned while meeting Alfredo.”
The cast includes soprano Lee Hye-jeong and Lee Ji-hyun as the female protagonist Violetta, tenor Jeong Ho-yoon and Son Ji-hoon as his lover Alfredo, and baritone Yu Dong-jik and Kim Ki-hoon as Alfredo’s father Germont, as well as vocalists active in Europe. Lee Ji-hyun and Son Ji-hoon will perform on the Korean opera stage for the first time in this performance. It will be conducted by Yeo Yeo-kyung and the Korea Coop Orchestra and Maesta Opera Choir will appear. 50,000 to 170,000 won.
