Berg is an advisor to Caksha on policy and process management issues. President of the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) Jānis Buks blames him for exerting political pressure.

Buks revealed to Latvijas Television that LOK’s relations with the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) have worsened after LOK refused to conclude a cooperation agreement with the publishing house “Rīgas vaňli”, where Berg previously worked. Berg’s sister Elina has been the operative manager of the publishing house since last October.

Buk also accused that he had received an instruction from the Ministry of the Interior to dismiss several long-term LOK employees. The ultimatum was also raised when choosing the head of the Latvian Olympic team.

Meanwhile, Chaksha perceives what the LOK president said as an insult and sees no justification for it.

“Considering that we are moving towards transparency in sports, it is absurd what Mr. Buck claims at the moment. No kind of influence is possible, considering that all funding is based on criteria,” said the minister.

She has yet to meet with Buck to discuss the allegations. At the same time, Chaksha noted that the LOK president has a big mandate to come up with offers of change, which she did not expect.

Chaksha emphasized that any decisions are made by the minister, not his advisor.

It has already been reported that the former Minister of Health Ilze Viņķele (AP) confirmed that Bergs attempted blackmail in other cases as well. “Close to bandit methods,” Viņķele wrote on Twitter.

Sandis Riekstiņš, the former parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science, also stated on Twitter that Buks is not lying. He allegedly received such information from “sports people”.
