Korean women’s archery ace Im Si-hyeon (Korea National Sport University) expressed her desire to win both individual and team gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
On the 17th, Im Si-hyun attended the 2024 Paris Olympics D-100 national team encouragement event ‘ONE TEAM!’ at the Champion House at the Jincheon Athletes’ Village in North Chungcheong Province. After completing ‘ONE DREAM!’, he met with reporters and confidently stated, “Korean archery is aiming to win five gold medals at the Paris Olympics.”
At the event, Lee Ki-heung, president of the Korea Sports Council, said, “We expect to win five gold medals at the Paris Olympics and finish around 15th overall.” In fact, the Korea Sports Council predicts that up to six gold medals will be won in this competition.
When asked, “The Sports Council has 5 goals, which are the same as the archery team’s goals,” Im Si-hyeon responded, “I didn’t know the Sports Council had 5 goals,” making the audience laugh.
Im Si-hyun is an ace who will lead the way in achieving the goal of five gold medals in Korean archery.
Im Si-hyun, who competed in the all-around competition for the first time at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games in September last year, won three gold medals by sweeping gold medals in the women’s team event, mixed event, and individual event. It has been 37 years since Yang Chang-hoon, who won four archery medals, and Kim Jin-ho and Park Jeong-ah, who won three archery medals, at the 1986 Seoul Games.
Im Si-hyeon, who passed the national team selection competition, which is said to be more difficult than an Olympic medal, in first place, will challenge for a triple gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Im Si-hyeon said, “As I am now in the position I wanted to be in, I will prepare hard with a sense of responsibility and bring good results at the Paris Olympics. I will do my best as much as I can.” “We plan to prepare just as well as the Hangzhou Asian Games,” he emphasized.
He said, “My top priority is to win a gold medal in the team event. “I plan to work hard on my solo exhibition as well,” he added.
Im Si-hyun said that although they prepare in the same way, the preparation atmosphere for the Olympics is different from the Asian Games. “I get more attention, and I feel a difference in mental management. “There seems to be a clear difference in the pressure felt by coaches, managers, and players.”
Korean women’s archery is challenging the feat of winning 10 consecutive team events at the Paris Olympics. Along with Im Si-hyun, Jeon Hoon-yeong (Incheon City Hall) and Nam Su-hyeon (Suncheon City Hall) will pull the bowstring in the team event.
Jeon Hoon-young and Nam Soo-hyun do not have much experience in international competitions. In particular, Nam Soo-hyun is a freshman who graduated from high school this year.
Im Si-hyun also has no Olympic experience, but he is the only one who has experienced an international all-around competition. He is in a position to lead other players in team competitions.
Im Si-hyun said, “There is a sense of responsibility and pressure, but I am working with players who were selected fairly based on their skills through a selection competition. “If you don’t feel anxious, you will be able to achieve good results,” he said, adding, “I will work hard to ensure that our university does not break the path that my seniors have taken so well.”
He continued, “We haven’t been able to work together among the team members yet. “We have to start by trying to work together,” he said.
With only 100 days left until the Olympics, Im Si-hyun said, “I will prepare thoroughly both technically and mentally. “I will do my best to live up to expectations,” he pledged.
