The request for impeachment against Chancellor Gabriela Sommerfeld has already entered the National Assembly. The legislator for the Citizen Revolution movement, Jhajaira Urresta, delivered the document on the afternoon of Sunday, April 7, 2024.
The proposal was presented with the support of 43 legislators. They accuse Sommerfeld of alleged breach of duty. This after the incursion of the National Police into the headquarters of the Mexican Embassy in Quito, to capture former vice president Jorge Glas.
In statements to the legislative media, Urresta states that international relations were poorly treated and the provisions of the Vienna Convention regarding political asylum were not complied with. Furthermore, he indicated that Glas can benefit from this condition, since his sentences are “of a political nature.”
«Inspection is our constitutional power and indispensable in times of conflict. The decision made by the Ecuadorian State and its representatives both to assault the Mexican Embassy and to kidnap a political asylum seeker,” said Urresta.
Likewise, legislator Leonardo Berrezueta filed a request for impeachment against the Minister of the Interior (e), Mónica Palencia.
For both procedures to be analyzed by the National Assembly, they must first complete a process that includes approval by the Legislative Administration Council (CAL). In addition, the political trials pending in the Legislature against former electricity minister Santos Alvite and Attorney General Diana Salazar must be prosecuted.
