The Free Constitutional Party in Tunisia announced, on Sunday, that it has officially decided to nominate its imprisoned leader, Abeer Moussa, for the presidential elections scheduled for the fall of this year.
In a statement, the Free Destourian called for Moussa’s release and for an end to what he called “the judicial harassment against which she is being subjected,” pointing out the danger of “the authority’s attempt to deprive her of her civil and political rights,” according to what was reported by the “Bawabat Tunis” website.
Moussa, a lawyer and former representative in the dissolved parliament, was one of the most prominent faces of the Tunisian opposition, and a fierce critic of Kais Saied and before him the Islamists, when they assumed power in the country.
Last October, a judge ordered the imprisonment of Abeer Moussa after she was arrested at the entrance to the presidential palace on suspicion of “an assault intended to alter the state’s structure and cause chaos,” as part of a campaign initiated by the authorities against opposition politicians.
Since the beginning of February last year, the authorities have detained many opponents, including the historic leader of the conservative Islamist Ennahda party, Rached Ghannouchi, as well as prominent figures, including former ministers and businessmen.
President Kais Saied, whom the opposition accuses of adopting an authoritarian approach, described those arrested as “terrorists,” saying they were involved in a “conspiracy against state security.”
The party renewed its condemnation of the “forcible” detention of its leader, rejecting “the blatant attack on her rights, denouncing the persecution of the party’s leaders, targeting its activists and activists, and obstructing its movements.”
In recent months, the Free Destourian Party organized protests against Saied. Moussa, head of the party, accuses Saeed of ruling outside the law.
Moussi is a supporter of the late president, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who was ousted by mass protests in 2011, an uprising that later spread throughout the Middle East, according to Reuters.
The “Free Constitutionalist” renewed its adherence to its right to political activity in accordance with what is guaranteed by national and international legislation, and its commitment to steadfastly defending in all peaceful and legitimate ways of struggle the rights of Tunisian men and women to participate in elections that conform to international standards, according to the statement.
It is noteworthy that the Secretary-General of the Republican Popular Union Party, Lotfi Al-Mraihi, announced last week his candidacy for the presidential elections scheduled to be held next fall, according to the Tunis Gateway.
Former Minister Munther Al-Zanaidi also officially announced his candidacy for the presidential elections.
