Electricity consumption in Switzerland fell by 1.7% in 2023 compared to the previous year, to 56.1 billion kilowatt hours (kWh), the Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) said on Thursday. This fall corresponds to the annual consumption of 200,000 households.
National consumption was 60.3 billion kWh, from which 4.2 billion kWh must be deducted due to losses related to transport and distribution, the OVEN states in a press release. In kWh, the drop of 1.7% over one year equates to 1 billion kWh.
The reduction in consumption was more significant in the first and second quarters, reaching 3.8% and 2.5% respectively. Electricity consumption in Switzerland has already fallen by 1.9% in 2022 compared to 2021.
Production on rise
At the same time, electricity production in Switzerland grew by 13.5% in 2023, reaching a record value of 72.1 billion kWh, compared to 63.5 billion kWh in 2022. After deducting 5.4 billion kWh for storage pump consumption, this results in net worth. produced 66.7 billion kWh, the SFOE shows.
Hydroelectric installations produced 40.8 billion kWh, or 21.7% more electricity than the previous year. Electricity production from the four nuclear power plants increased by 1%, to 23.3 billion kWh.
Thus hydroelectric power plants provided 56.6% of the total electricity production, nuclear power plants 32.4%, conventional thermal power plants and renewable installations 11%.
