Geneva: The HRC holds its 55th ordinary session from February 26 to April 5

The session will be attended by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, as well as Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, indicates a press release from the HRC.

The Council will consider more than 100 reports submitted by the United Nations Secretariat and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, by human rights experts and by other investigative bodies concerning numerous themes and interesting the human rights situation in nearly 45 countries, specifies the same source, noting that in total, the HRC will hold 23 interactive debates with mandate holders under special procedures.

The session will begin with a high-level debate in which senior dignitaries representing more than 110 countries will take part, from Monday February 26 to Wednesday February 28, notes the HRC, adding that Mr. Türk will present the update of his report on March 4 annual report on the human rights situation in the world.

The Council, which currently has 47 member countries, will examine several reports concerning the rights to housing, food, the environment, as well as problems linked to climate change and the situation of human rights defenders.

In addition to the issue of racial discrimination and xenophobia, the HRC will address the issues of children in armed conflicts and people with disabilities.
