For several days, discussions regarding the departure of Russian peacekeepers from Karabakh have become the main topic of the region’s agenda.

It is known that the peacekeepers were temporarily deployed in Karabakh in accordance with the tripartite declaration signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia on November 10, 2020.

In the clause of that declaration regarding peacekeepers, it was stated that they will operate in Karabakh until November 2025. If one of the parties does not agree six months before the end of 2025, the peacekeepers would have left the region.

But the process started earlier, and according to official information, the peacekeepers will have completely left Karabakh by September 2024.

In general, the process of demilitarization of Karabakh has already started. From this point of view, there was no need for any foreign military unit to stay in the region.

Of course, the start of this process earlier than expected and with the consent of the parties is an indicator of the atmosphere of trust between Azerbaijan and Russia.

The withdrawal of peacekeepers will lead to further improvement of Baku-Moscow relations.

At the root of mutual trust in Azerbaijan-Russia relations lies the personal relations of the leaders of the two countries.
