The World Press Photo contest’s Photograph of the Year prize was awarded to the image of a Palestinian woman hugging the body of her niece, killed alongside her mother and sister by an Israeli missile, the organization announced this Wednesday.

Captured by photographer Mohammed Salemfrom the international agency Reuters, in the Nasser hospital morgue, the image shows Inas Abu Maamar, 36 years old, hugging the body of her niece Saly, five years old, already wrapped in a white sheet, after being killed by an Israeli missile that hit his home in Khan Younis, in the Gaza Strip.

“The jury was deeply moved by the way this image evokes an emotional reflection in each viewer. Composed with care and respect, it offers a metaphorical and literal glimpse into an unimaginable loss”, can be read in the statement released about the image captured days after the photographer himself became a father.

In the Story of the Year category, the winner was South African Lee-Ann Olwage with a work in Madagascar, about how “a lack of public awareness about dementia means that people who show symptoms of memory loss are often stigmatized ”.

“The jury appreciated how this story addresses a universal health issue through the lens of family and care. The selection of images is composed with care and tenderness and reminds viewers of the love and closeness necessary in a time of global war and aggression”, added the organization of the most important photojournalism award in the world.
