“Swallows 2024”, an event that is a welcome to spring and swallows, was implemented again this year by the Epirus Protected Areas Management Unit in collaboration with the Hellenic Ornithological Society.
Events are implemented every March in approximately 35 regions of the country and school groups participate in them, as well as the general public, offering joy and satisfaction to organizers, children, parents and teachers. The purpose of the “Swallows” is mainly to make children aware of the arrival of swallows, to be informed about their long and difficult journey and to help them by making clay swallow nests.
On Tuesday, March 12, the Agnanta Dance was hosted at the Information Center in Agnanta, where a presentation was held about the National Park of Tzoumerka, Peristeri and the Arachthos Ravine and the Information Center in Agnanta (2012-2024), also targeting the swallows of previous years, through photographic material. This was followed by a presentation about the swallows of the Hellenic Ornithological Society and the construction of swallow nests.
On Thursday, March 14, a corresponding action took place with the High School-High School Classes of Agnantos and participants from the services of the Municipality of Central Tzoumerko.
On Thursday, April 4, and following the actions “Helidonismata 2024” in Agnada, nests made of clay, which the students had built during the previous action, were placed in the school yard.
On March 19 and 26, presentations of the Hellenic Ornithological Society on swallows and the construction of swallow nests were held at Katsika Primary School with the participation of 40 children of the 3rd grade and at the 13th Primary School of Ioannina with the participation of 60 children of the 6th grade.
On March 28 and April 2, a presentation of the Hellenic Ornithological Society on swallows and the construction of swallow nests, as well as various crafts and paintings, was held at the Acheron Straits Information Kiosk in Glyki with the participation of 100 students from the Primary Schools of Glyki, Souli and Gardiki .
A similar activity took place on March 29 and April 4 at the Pantheon Cultural Center in Igoumenitsa with the participation of 176 students from the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th Primary School of Igoumenitsa and the Primary School of Kastri, while on Tuesday, April 2 a presentation was shown about swallows and construction of swallow nests took place at the 2nd Primary School of Eleusis with the participation of 55 students of the 2nd and 3rd grades.
Finally, in collaboration with some of the schools that participated in the celebration, nests were placed in selected places on their premises, giving students the opportunity to watch both the arrival of the swallows and their use of the nests.
