A long-standing friendship with unspoken truths and many knots to untangle. Airing tonight on Rai 1 (at 9.30pm) is there The Miracle Clubwith three legendary actresses such as Kathy Bates, Laura Linney, Maggie Smith.
The Miracle Clubthe plot of the movie
Chrissie Ahearn (Laura Linney) returns to Ballygar, Ireland, for the funeral of his mother Maureen (Brenda Fricker), after spending about forty years in the United States. She left her homeland following a harsh clash with her mother. Once she arrives at the cemetery, she notices with disappointment that no one is there for her last farewell.
Discovers that the community went to a singing competition organized by the parishprecisely in memory of Maureen. Up for grabs is a trip to Lourdes. Among those present, the three historical friends of the mother: Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates) e Dolly (Agnes O’Casey).
The film is set in 1967, women are relegated to domestic duties and the only way to be able to move away from the marital home is to find a trick that allows them to do so without arousing suspicion. They decide to sign up for the competition in the hope of taking first place. Victory could serve as a passport to a glimpse of freedom.
Chrissie’s past with Declan
Furthermore, Lourdes represents hope for Dolly. Her son is mute and she has not yet been able to obtain a definitive diagnosis. She is therefore confident in a miraculous intervention. Eileen discovered she had a lump in her breast and leaves in search of a grace. The trip, then, represents an escape from her irascible husband and the children and grandchildren she has to look after.
In the end, Lily. On the one hand, she hopes to recover from the problem that afflicts her leg; on the other, he hopes to make peace with the sense of guilt who has accompanied her since the day she was struck by a serious loss. Chrissie’s arrival in Ballygar upsets the balance. In particular, it is Lily who has a reaction that poorly hides unresolved issues.
Chrissie grew up with Lily’s son Declan. They were close, in love and seemed to have a future ahead of them. Cruel fate, however, broke that dream at the moment Declan drowned. It was 1927, he was 27 years old and a good swimmer. Lily harbors a grudge against Chrissie because at the time she was pregnant and, after the death of her boyfriend, she decided to have an abortion.
The Miracle Clubtruths to reckon with
It is clear, however, that this choice had repercussions on his life. Over the course of the film the plot thickens and it is discovered that when she had an abortion, the news spread throughout the city due to the gossip spread by Eileen, Lily’s best friendwhich Chrissie never forgave.
Furthermore, the chatter has turned into shame, to the point that Chrissie’s mother sent her away from Ballygar because not strong enough to bear the weight of shame. And her departure for the United States created a deep wound and also conflicting positions among the friends themselves.
Once the competition is won, the friends prepare to leave. And with great surprise Chrissie decides to join even though she is an atheist. The journey turns into a great opportunity, but not without obstacles. The contrasts are tangible and coexistence brings their respective secrets to the surface.
Thanks to Chrissie, the four are able to be honest with each other and Lourdes takes on a particular meaning. Beyond the hope of a miracle, in fact, it instills in each of them a priceless sense of reconciliation. In the end, brings to light the cracks of the past that Chrissie now has to deal with. She and she is forced to face it in order to move forward.
